Bible Passage: Philippians 2:3-4 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests but also to the interests of others.
I must admit that I seldom stop and consider the motives behind my words or actions. I say or do what comes to mind. If my heart is evil, what comes out is not good. Therefore, it is best that I fill myself with the goodness of God so that when I respond, it brings honor and glory to His name.
It amazes me that if I purposefully assess the impact of my reactions, my response would likely change. Looking to the interest of others may result in no reaction at all. It is hard to understand and execute Christ’s call to surrender oneself in response to something that goes against our desires, but this is discipleship in its purest form.
The world considers this weakness, but it takes great restraint not to lash out to make our desires known. Our pride will cause us to fall if it is unchecked. No matter what the issue may be, our response has an impact.
Look at Jesus during His trial. Allegation after allegation was levied against Him, all with an agenda of punishing Him. He never defended Himself and only responded in the truth. He chose silence as His response, trusting in God for the outcome, knowing full well that the cross was His destiny.
In the end, our flesh is lost. Death is inevitable, so what we do with life makes our reaction even more critical. Now is the time for witnessing the truth of Jesus Christ. Our reactions become our witnesses, both good and bad, so guard your response with humility, looking to the interest of others ahead of yourself.
Do you measure your reaction to life's challenges? Are your responses self-centered or surrender-driven? God-centered reactions will change the narrative of life, even if they have no impact on those around us. Let God be glorified rather than you be satisfied.
