Bible Passage: Proverb 4:23 Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.

The scripture I chose to meditate on today stopped me in my tracks. I had never considered that life’s challenges often start with my reaction to life. When I focus on my wants and desires, trouble begins. Life is not always about me, but it is always about my reactions. It is amazing how differently I respond when my day starts centered on God and His desires for my life.

When I stop to consider God's amazing grace and mercies, I find peace and joy amid chaos and tribulation. I do not deserve His favor, and I am confident I deserve His wrath. Left to my desires, I would be a different person—volatile, frustrated, and set on edge. When my perspective shifts from myself to God, I handle life’s challenges with the peace that God gives me.

We need to guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus so that we are in the right frame of mind to handle life’s challenges with gentleness and peace. Making decisions on our own often adds fuel to a raging fire. Think about this for a moment: When someone irritates you, your response can drag that encounter to new lows when you seek to avenge, strike back, or stop the irritation with the love of God. The choice is ours to make.

God wants us to produce the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These can only occur when we remain in God's presence through prayer, study, worship, and service. We must walk as children of God, mindful of who we are and our destiny.
